The most common procedure performed on the breast is augmentation. This is also known as augmentation mammaplasty. With augmentation, breasts are enhanced by various sizes of implants filled with salt water or silicone gel. The breast implants may be placed under the muscle tissue of the chest wall or under the breast gland. The technique used will vary based on the patient’s skin quality and existing body frame.
The breast implants themselves are silicone sacs or shells filled with either a saline fluid (salt water) or silicone gel. The silicone shells have a textured or smooth surface. There are many sizes, shapes, and styles of implants to choose from. Part of the consultation process is determining the best size and shape based on each patient’s desires, skin elasticity, and body frame. Dr. Gwen Maxwell considers all of these factors when making a recommendation.
Breast Augmentation surgery usually takes an hour and is performed in our State Certified Surgical Center. Recovery time depends on the individual patient and the implant placement. Soreness and discomfort are felt in the breast for one to two days following surgery. Prescription medications are provided to help relieve this discomfort. You can normally return to work in less than one week, but active exercise should be avoided for four to six weeks.
A consultation is the first step to having breast augmentation. If you are ready or would just like to learn more, please call the office at (520) 751-1225.
